In the Ardèche region of France, the Tannerie d’Annonay also produces very high-quality leather. Hermès has not fully acquired this tannery, so its leather circulates throughout the general supply chain. Shebag is able to source top-grade leather from Tannerie d’Annonay.

In the Alsace region of France, Tanneries Haas produces exceptionally high-quality calfskin and lambskin. This tannery has also not been acquired by Hermès, so Shebag is able to source its leather.

In its public sustainability reports, Hermès mentions its “7 tanneries” (5 in France, 1 in Italy, 1 in the US) as part of its leather processing and supply system. The majority of its leather comes from Europe (approx. 92%) and is a “by-product” of the food industry.

Hermès emphasizes that “80% of production is carried out in France” and prioritizes “vertical and local” suppliers to control quality and traceability.

It is precisely because of Shebag’s long-term relationships in Europe that the small-batch, high-quality leather we purchase can rival that of Hermès.
